I've been taking the pill every day for a few weeks now, hence my late Vine review, but I held off any evaluation until I had some sense of what the pill was doing. At this point though, it's really hard to tell, but then I don't have any health problems (touch wood), so maybe this pill would work for others. In some respect, it's like taking an Ibuprofen when you don't have a headache - it appears as though there's no effect at all.
I was wondering if bacterial cultures are more effective in a live yogurt than a pill form. The bottle claims to have billions of live bacteria "at the time of encapsulation", so whether they're alive or dead when they arrive in the mailbox is a key question. I did find an article on NPR however, where Dr Robynne Cutkan discussed the theories around beneficial live probiotics but also issued a caveat for the pill versions:
---
Chutkan advises her patients that probiotics sold as nonrefrigerated, pill-form supplements may not contain enough active bacteria to be effective. The problem, she says, is that heat, oxygen, or moisture may render many of these bacteria inactive. She warns that anecdotal evidence cited on a Web site or package is not sufficient proof of effectiveness.
---
So the jury's out on their effectiveness, but's that true of many supplements such as EDTA, which many claim anecdotally to experience significant benefits from. My only other comment about the product is that it's somewhat expensive at $33 - if I were to stick with the probiotic program, I might just buy some Activa instead.
